What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a concept first thought to be described in a 1964 paper as:
the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one's goal(s).

How is it different to IQ?

IQ or intelligence quotient, is a number derived from a standardized intelligence test of reasoning or processing.

Why is it important?

At one point in time, IQ was viewed as the primary determinant of success.
However now it is considered that both EQ and IQ contribute to balance and success in life and in the workplace. Further it is believed that EQ can be developed and practiced.
