About me

Background

I am a non-traditional data scientist, most recently at a supply chain startup, and self taught developer.

I discovered data science as a magical field that combines my Actuarial background in stats and analytical skills; my project and multitasking experience from 10+ years project delivery in Credit Risk and Finance; a curiosity of numbers and patterns; love of learning new tools and concepts whilst working with a variety of people and teams.

When not with family watching or participating in a variety of outdoors and sports activities, I am using data of the outdoors to experiment with data visualisation and maps.

Current Work

I am currently in the Enspiral Dev Academy (EDA) bootcamp cohort, to fast-forward my JavaScript, front end development and data visualisations skills.

I also work remotely through my freelance arm, Validly. These are a few of the areas I have worked in:

  • Data discovery and analysis in R
  • Interactive visualisations with R, D3 and JavaScript
  • Feature Engineering for machine learning in R
  • Time series in R
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) in R and Python
  • Geospatial analysis in R
  • Website development for new, small businesses

Conferences

R-Ladies Auckland Meetup

I founded the Auckland chapter of R-Ladies in November 2017. I was inspired by attending the R-Ladies Melbourne meetup in October 2017. Over and above supporting the R-Ladies mission, I would like to encourage those who have had career breaks or would like to change mid-career involved in the R and data science communities.

SatRday New Zealand

I have also established the local New Zealand group for community led SatRday conferences. We are planning to throw the first Auckland conference in Q1 2020.

Manifesto for Data Practices

I have signed the Manifesto for Data Practices. These values and principles, taken together, describe the most effective, ethical, and modern approach to data teamwork.
